Whether you’re trying to create an online store to sell your products, a portfolio to display your art or a page that’ll give your business some online presence, you’ll eventually start asking yourself how to host a website. There are three ways you can go about this – using a free hosting service, hiring a hosting company, or hosting it yourself.
Using A Free Hosting Service
This is a very easy option for beginners, and won’t cost you anything. A free hosting service usually comes with a few downsides, such as limitations on the content, displaying ads and limitations on storage space and bandwidth usage. However, they are excellent for those who are starting and would like to try making a website free of charge. They also provide features such as ready-made templates, automatic backup and security tools.
Some examples of free third-party hosting services are Google Sites, Weebly and WordPress. You may also look for a ‘trial’ version of a paid hosting company – there are plenty, and they’re easy to find. Hosting a website in one of these services consists basically of registering at their website and following the instructions they provide – you shouldn’t have much trouble doing so.
Hiring A Hosting Company
If you can afford to hire a good hosting company, you can easily take your website to the next level. Such companies tend to provide all the benefits these free services offer, as well as allowing you to use your own domain and offering 24/7 costumer support. Should you decide to hire a company, you won’t have to worry about them placing advertisement on your website, and you will likely have much more bandwidth usage and storage space at your disposal.
Some renowned hosting companies you might be interested in hiring are iPage, GoDaddy, HostGator, Arvixe, InMotion Hosting, and Just Host. Each of them offer different pros and cons, so make sure you do your research before picking one. In order to host a website this way, you’ll have to register at their website and follow more complex instructions – if you find yourself stuck, get help from your provider, through support tickets, live chats or knowledge bases.
Hosting It Yourself
Some more experienced users decide take it in their own hands and host their website themselves. If you’re wondering how to host a website all by yourself, you should first make sure that you’re the right person to do it. This is a good option for those with more of a technical background, and preferably who own a powerful computer and great internet connection.
To host your website yourself, make sure you have a static IP address, and download hosting software such as Wampserver. Type in ‘localhost’ in the server name when prompted. Then, register a domain name and make sure its pointed to your IP address. Place your content and HTML files at the ‘www’ folder Wampserver will create, and you should be able to access it.
